FIFA World Cup 26™, MLB All-Star Week, PGA Championship and other significant events boost Center City hotel revenue
PHILADELPHIA: Throughout Philadelphia’s “Summer of Sports,” coupled with other major citywide events secured by the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau (PHLCVB), area hotels experienced a record-setting stretch from May 1 through August 31, 2026. Center City Philadelphia hotels saw $335.6M in revenue, up 20.6% when compared to the same months in 2025.
The season’s marquee moments included the PGA Championship, six FIFA World Cup matches, including a Round of 16 on July 4 which coincided with the nation’s Semiquincentennial celebrations, MLB All-Star Week, and UFC 330, in addition to 112 other meetings and citywide conventions brought in by the PHLCVB. As the organization responsible for booking and hosting most of the major sporting events this summer, the PHLCVB has released key Center City hotel data which illustrates the success of this summer’s slate of events.
Center City Hotel Data* Highlights:
Hotel revenue is one of the most direct indicators of how major events translate into tangible economic benefits for Philadelphia. This strong performance demonstrates the value of attracting and hosting major events, which is key to the mission of the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau.
“This summer gave Philadelphia an unprecedented opportunity to showcase our city to the world, and we proved that we could deliver exceptional experiences on a global scale,” said Gregg Caren, president and CEO of the PHLCVB, whose team lead the charge on bidding and securing NCAA March Madness, MLB All-Star Game, and FIFA World Cup 26™ events, some five to ten years in the making. “Major events also translate directly into business for our hotels, restaurants, and other hospitality partners, supporting the thousands of people whose work makes Philadelphia such a welcoming destination. For the PHLCVB, this summer is more than a moment. It’s a powerful proof point that we can leverage to drive visitation and economic impact for years to come.”
Philadelphia’s summer of events delivered an immediate impact by bringing visitors to area restaurants, hotels, attractions, and neighborhoods, while creating an opportunity to introduce the city to audiences from around the world. In fact, fans from all 50 states and 190 countries attended events in Philadelphia this summer, from FIFA World Cup matches to FIFA Fan Festival™ at Lemon Hill, to the America 250 celebration on July 4th, among others. The successful events strengthened Philadelphia’s reputation as a world-class destination and demonstrated clearly that the city has the experience and infrastructure to host on the global stage.
“The strength of Philadelphia’s hotel performance illustrates just how valuable major events are to our hospitality industry,” said Ed Grose, president and CEO of the Greater Philadelphia Hotel Association. “Increased revenue provides meaningful support not only for our properties, but for the thousands of people who work in them every day. A strong summer like this creates greater stability for our hotel community while reinforcing the value of continuing to attract events that bring overnight visitors to Philadelphia.”
In 2027, Philadelphia, by way of the PHLCVB and its PHL Sports division, will host additional major sporting events including two NCAA championships: 2027 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Regional Championship and 2027 NCAA DI, DII and DIII Men’s Lacrosse Championships. Then, for the 91st time, Philadelphia will welcome the return of the Army-Navy Game on December 11, 2027, at Lincoln Financial Field. Philadelphia has hosted “America’s Game” more than any destination in its history, and in 2027, the city is expected to see more than 69,000 visitors for the matchup.
In addition to the sporting events the PHLCVB secures, booking meetings and conventions is core to the organization’s business and its mission. This portfolio remains the largest body of work for the PHLCVB team, with many conventions and events taking place at the Pennsylvania Convention Center and across many Center City hotels and venues. Over the coming year, the PHLCVB has booked major conventions that span life sciences, sports and recreation, architecture, engineering, and public health and safety. Most notably the American Institute of Architects Conference on Architecture & Design in May 2027 is expected to bring 13,000 attendees; 2027 Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) International Conference in June 2027 is expected to attract 16,000 attendees; the International Association of Chiefs of Police Annual Conference in October 2027 is projected to bring 20,000 attendees; and the AACR Philadelphia Marathon in November, which anticipates 35,000 attendees, will all be held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
Caren added, “on the heels of 2026, the PHLCVB team and those across the hospitality and tourism industry in Philadelphia continue to set their sights on what’s next for the city; how we can build on the momentum and energy of the year; and how we continue leading the way in bringing more meetings, more business, and more international travelers to Philadelphia.”
