Philadelphia's Investment in Innovation

Where breakthrough science meets bold ideas.

Philadelphia is home to one of the fastest growing and most collaborative life sciences ecosystems in the country. From gene and cell therapy to digital health, the city is at the forefront of healthcare innovation, making it an inspiring setting for meetings, conventions, and scientific gatherings of all kinds.

A Global Leader in Life Sciences

A city of medical history and medical firsts, we are still making history with our breakthrough research, innovations, and therapies. Our assets include seven medical schools, 22 nursing schools, and 80% of the world’s pharma. Fueled by top-tier research institutions like the University of Pennsylvania, CHOP, Drexel University, and Temple University, Philadelphia is a magnet for biotech companies and global talent. The city is ranked among the top life sciences hubs in the U.S. It attracts more than $1 billion in venture capital funding annually. Philadelphia also boasts over 50 million square feet of lab and research space, either built or planned.

Companies like Amicus Therapeutics have established major operations here, including its 75,000-square-foot Global Research and Gene Therapy Center of Excellence. Philadelphia is also the birthplace of the first FDA-approved CAR-T cell therapy, thanks to research led by Penn Medicine.

Innovation Districts That Inspire

Philadelphia’s innovation landscape is anchored by dynamic, walkable hubs:

  • University City Science Center – A 14-acre campus of cutting-edge labs, accelerators, and coworking spaces in the heart of University City.
  • Pennovation Works – A 23-acre innovation hub developed by the University of Pennsylvania connecting academic research with industry applications.
  • Navy Yard – A thriving business campus and research community home to more than 150 companies, including advanced life sciences and clean tech firms.
  • INEST – Temple University’s new home for the development of research-based innovations.

These districts are not only home to major discoveries — they are ideal tour sites and networking venues for business events looking to plug into Philadelphia’s innovation economy.
