All things Rocky take center stage as “Rocky Season” honors the 50th anniversary of the original Oscar-winning film with movie screenings, runs, book launches, a step-climbing challenge, and citywide celebrations.
Philadelphia is world-famous as the birthplace of American independence, the home of Benjamin Franklin, the capital of cheesesteaks, and the domain of passionate sports fans. Yet perhaps nothing is more deeply synonymous with the grit and heart of the City of Brotherly Love than Rocky Balboa.
Since the release of the Academy Award-winning Rocky in 1976, millions of fans have flocked to Philadelphia inspired to follow Sylvester Stallone’s footsteps and charge up the 72 stone steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art — now known globally as the Rocky Steps. Across five sequels and the acclaimed Creed spin-off trilogy, the underdog fighter has firmly cemented his place in Philadelphia culture over half a century.
With a nearly consistent line of people taking photos with the Rocky Statue, and a franchise-inspired store, Philadelphia celebrates year round but this milestone year brings an unprecedented lineup of festivities. Organized by the Philadelphia Visitor Center Corporation (PVCC) in partnership with Bank of America, Rocky Season 2026 brings the entire cinematic legacy together for an unforgettable citywide festival.
To celebrate 50 years of Rocky’s underdog spirit, Rocky Season features special events spanning every neighborhood. The festivities kicked off with the release of Stallone’s memoir, The Steps, and will culminate on official Rocky Day (December 3) — marking the exact 50th anniversary of the original film’s theatrical premiere.
Highlights throughout the season include exclusive book signings, guided Rocky Philadelphia Bus Tours, the theatrical release of I Play Rocky, a temporarily yarn-bombing art installation on the Rocky Statue, and a formal sculpture rededication ceremony titled Rocky Returns Home (November 13).

The annual Rocky Run (November 14) brings around 45,000 runners from across all 50 states and 75 countries to compete in 5K, 10-mile, and half-marathon races. The fall running calendar also honors real-life fighting legends: The Smokin’ Joe Frazier Run, Walk, Roll pays homage to Philadelphia’s legendary World Heavyweight Champion and real-life boxing hero.
Fans looking to train like the Italian Stallion can test their limits in two iconic movie-inspired recreations. The Rocky Steps Challenge (November 7) challenges Rocky-wannabes to conquer the 72 steps in under 12 seconds. For those who prefer heavy-bag work, the historic Reading Terminal Market hosts the Meat Market Challenge (October 24), giving fans a chance to take swings at real hangs of beef right along neighboring Filbert Street.
