Meet the Mascot: Gritty in the City
The flowing beard. The bright orange fur. Those eyes… The Philadelphia Flyers’ new mascot, Gritty, emerged from his home beneath the Wells Fargo Center in 2018 and has since reached an iconic status both locally and nationally. With frequent appearances on late-night television, the mascot’s hot-dog-eating, T-shirt-launching, hockey-loving persona is lovable and infectious, even to non-hockey fans. We were curious about what Philadelphia attractions, restaurants, and activities keep Gritty entertained when he’s not busy cheering on his favorite team …
Q. As a lifelong Philadelphian, what do you like best about the city?
A. Mostly, the people who help me cheer on the Flyers every day.
Q. When Flyers fans are coming to town, what Philadelphia attractions do you recommend?
A. 1. Can’t visit the city without the iconic horse and carriage rides—on a nice spring Saturday afternoon.
2. Obviously the Wells Fargo Center. It’s the best place in the city, and I’m petitioning for it to become the 8th Wonder of the World. So if anyone here has a contact with VisitWorld that would be greatly appreciated.
Q. When looking to tap into Philadelphia’s cultural side, where do you go?
A. I’m a big jazz scene guy. I love checking out the open mics with my kazoo.
Q. You claim to have been around for longer than we know. What are some of your favorite historical locations, and did you have some historical involvement with them that you’d like to share?
A. You have to check out Elfreth’s Alley. I love those cobblestones and the craziest part—if you look in the windows they have real life people in the houses as if they actually live there! So talented. Takes my breath away.
Q. In the off-season, where can we catch you and your friends hanging out and relaxing?
A. Thinking of booking a cruise or two for the summer. What are the summer destinations for the Spirit of Philadelphia looking like?
