2019 PHLCVB Annual Report

The Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau (PHLCVB) 2019 Annual Report underscores the importance of Philadelphia’s tourism industry and its role as an economic engine for the city.

With more than 76,700 hospitality-related jobs in Philadelphia, tourism is one of the city’s largest employment sectors and will be a critical pillar in the COVID-19 business recovery strategy.

Convention and group segments generated 1.1 million hotel room nights in Philadelphia, leading to $234 million in group hotel room revenue, a 1.7% year-over-year growth.

585 PHLCVB-booked events brought 788,000 attendees to Philadelphia. These meeting attendees and organizers spent an estimated $388 million in market, and when cycled through our economy, yielded an economic impact of $600 million.

In 2018 (latest data available), Philadelphia welcomed nearly 700,000 overseas visitors – a 7.5% year-over-year increase – setting a record with a growth rate nearly 3x the national average, increasing Philadelphia’s overall market share of overseas visitors to the U.S.

Overseas visitors set modern-day records in two key areas by generating $723 million in direct spending resulting in a total economic impact of $1.2 billion.

As the PHLCVB addresses the challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic, we will move forward with strength, resiliency and unstoppable ingenuity—continuing to build on the groundwork that has been laid while remaining focused on putting our industry back to work.
