Tindley Temple United Methodist Church

Description

Our Senior Pastor is Rev. Lillian Smith, a spiritual guiding force for our congregation.  We are Christians who believe in message of God the Father and His son Jesus Christ.  We believe in the power of prayer and we believe in putting our faith into action: through serving God, helping each other, and serving our community.  Our mission is to make disciples for Christ.  We fully subscribe to the United Methodist Church credo:  Open Hearts. Open Minds. Open Doors.

Members

Tindley members are welcoming and dedicated servants of God.  We work constantly to enrich our faith, enhance our membership through   evangelism, and service the community through our Soup Kitchen.  We have Christ-Servant ministers who visit the sick and infirm, lead worship services, and provide encouragement to all.

History

Founded in 1837, Tindley has a rich legacy of excellent gospel music, inspirational preaching, and community service.  Dr. Charles Albert Tindley, a pastor of the church during the Depression years, is known as the 'Father of Gospel Music'.  Dr. Tindley composed more than 60 hymns, songs such as 'Stand by Me', "Leave It There", and "We'll Understand It Better By and By".
