Meeting Planner Q & A

Tom

Meeting planners who have already hosted events in Philadelphia can provide the inside scoop if you’re considering bringing your conference or convention to our city. Meet Tom Pellet, Director of the American Academy of Family Physicians whose Scientific Assembly met in Philadelphia in October 2012.

What was your experience like hosting a conference in Philadelphia?
Being the third largest medical organization in the U.S., it is our mission to provide our attendees with a convention location that delivers a value-added meeting experience. Philadelphia delivered that experience not only with a variety of entertainment options, but with the facilities and professionalism to produce a first class meeting event that bolstered our members’ practice and strengthened their profession.

What surprised you about hosting your conference in Philadelphia?
Philadelphia has always been depicted as an expensive and hard union city to work with when conducting an event there. We did not find that to be true. Starting early, we worked with the city, the PHLCVB and the unions to put together a contractual arrangement that was fair and equitable to all parties, which set the stage for a successful event. Next, we planned well in advance, followed the contractual agreement and communicated excessively with all the parties involved to ensure a smooth transition to on site.

What did your host hotel or PHLCVB representative do to make your Philadelphia experience a satisfactory one?
I think the biggest thing that the PHLCVB representative and our convention service manager did for us was never saying NO, but was willing to help look into our request and try to accommodate us.

Being from Kansas City which just acquired former Eagles’ coach Andy Reid, what do you think Philadelphia’s Superbowl chances are with a new head coach?
A new coach may help Philly but it will not get them to the Super bowl this year. Being headquartered in Kansas City we would like to thank you for giving us your old coach.
