Industrial Segment of BIO returns to Philadelphia in July

The BIO World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology returns to Philadelphia from July 16-18, 2018. Last here in 2014, this is the world’s largest industrial biotechnology gathering for business leaders, investors and policy makers in biofuels, bio-based products and renewable chemicals.

This segment of the biotech industry continues to grow around the generation of green jobs, making greener products and developing cleaner processes aimed at building a bio-based economy. More than 2,100 business partnering meetings are already scheduled at the conference, up almost 10 percent from last year. It is also notable that the group will meet one year prior to BIO International Convention, returning to Philadelphia in June 2019.

Hosting the BIO World Congress in our region is an ideal way to promote our life science assets to key decision makers in the biotechnology industry for both business attraction and future investment. For more information, visit

Promoting Philadelphia in Brazilian and Arabian Markets

The PHLCVB Global Tourism Department represented Philadelphia during the Visit USA Brazil Roadshow and Arabian Travel Market recently, as well as secured coverage in Leisure Group Travel magazine.

  • Visit USA Brazil: In April, Svetlana Yazovskikh, Executive Director of Global Tourism, represented PHLCVB during Visit USA Brazil Roadshow in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Curitiba, with over 1,200 travel trade representatives in attendance. While in Brazil, PHLCVB held destination training presentations for more than 400 travel agents in São Paulo and 450 agents in Rio de Janeiro. The feedback from these events has been overwhelmingly positive; Philadelphia resonates strongly in the Brazilian market for its proximity to New York City, great value for money, walkability and tax-free shopping. Agents are actively proposing Philadelphia to their clients as a result of our previous visits and are getting very positive feedback about their clients’ experience. Coupled with the events of the Visit USA Roadshow, PHLCVB also met with product managers of top tour operators during targeted sales calls in São Paulo, Rio, Florianopolis and Curitiba to ensure overnight packages are offered and promoted through the top players in the market. Brazil market currently brings 13,000 visitors to Philadelphia who generate 23,300 room nights. This is projected to show steady growth over the next five years. For more information about Brazil market for Philadelphia, see our Brazil Market Snapshot.
  • Arabian Travel Market: In April, Jim DePhilippo, Tourism Sales Manager, attended Arabian Travel Market in Dubai. ATM is one of the market leading international travel and tourism events that helps to unlock business potential within the Middle East and beyond for inbound and outbound tourism professionals. Tourism destinations from around the world showcased a diverse range of accommodation options, tourism attractions and travel technology and key airline routes. PHLCVB shared an exhibitor booth with TeamAmerica, a full service Receptive Tour Operator, helping to provide added exposure. FIT business is prevalent in this market, including some interest in higher end hotel properties. Jim met with over 50 travel agents, tour operators, airline partners and media through one on one appointments and seminars. Exhibiting provided an ideal venue in helping to educate key contacts from the Middle East, countries from North Africa, as well as India and Pakistan, on all that Philadelphia has to offer.
  • Leisure Group Travel magazine: Philadelphia was featured in the April edition of Leisure Group Travel magazine, a leading publication in the group travel industry. This feature was the direct result of a PHLCVB hosted Press FAM in January 2018. You can read the featured articles here:
