Ghana fans' guide to FIFA World Cup in Philadelphia

Ghana Flag

The eyes of Ghana and the global football community will soon be fixed on Philadelphia as the Black Stars take the pitch for the 2026 FIFA World Cup™ at Philadelphia Stadium.

A consistent powerhouse for the African continent, Ghana is set to face Croatia in Group L play on Saturday, June 27. We invite Ghanaian fans to discover why Philadelphia is the perfect host for the beautiful game.

Cultural connections: Ghana & Philadelphia

Ghana, like Philadelphia (home to Independence Hall), is a land of UNESCO World Heritage, specifically noted for its historic forts and coastal castles.

Philadelphia is home to a passionate community of thousands of Ghanaians, with hundreds more residing in the surrounding countryside. Ghanaians are an integral part of Philadelphia’s vibrant West African diaspora community — many residing in West Philadelphia and Southwest Philadelphia’s “Africatown” section — which takes center stage every June during the annual ODUNDE Festival.

Ghanaian pride is also on display on the pitch, with forward Ezekiel Alladoh suiting up for the MLS’ Philadelphia Union. Midfielder David Accam and defender Joshua Yaro have also famously donned the Union kit.

The bond extends to the gridiron as well: former Philadelphia Eagles Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel was born in Accra, Ghana.

A taste of Ghana in Philadelphia

Looking for a taste of West Africa while in town? Philadelphia offers authentic Ghanaian cuisine, including cassava-infused staples like fufu and banku, alongside flavorful dishes featuring goat, beans, and spicy fish. Key destinations include Southwest Philadelphia’s Djoliba Restaurant (6735 Elmwood Ave.), North Philadelphia’s Mama Shan’s African and Soul Food Cuisine (2957 N 22nd St.), and Northern Liberties’ Suya Suya West African Grill (400 Fairmount Ave.).
