There is no better place to celebrate July Fourth than in Philadelphia, the city where it all began.
On July 4, 1776, the Founding Fathers met in Philadelphia to sign the Declaration of Independence, giving birth to a new nation. With historic landmarks, such as Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, Philadelphia is a captivating backdrop to commemorate America’s birthday. Embracing the essence of liberty, unity, and independence, Philadelphia invites individuals from all walks of life to celebrate freedom.
The part of Philadelphia where the Founding Fathers debated, drafted, and forged the Declaration of Independence remains in many places historically accurate and faithfully unchanged. Independence National Historic Park in Old City houses a collection of sites significant to the nation’s founding. Visitors can walk the same paths as George Washington and Benjamin Franklin in Independence Mall — America’s “most historic square mile.”
Situated on Independence Mall is Independence Hall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were adopted. Also on the Mall is the President’s House, the former residence of Presidents George Washington and John Adams while in office.
While there, visitors grapple with the paradox of slavery and freedom at the nation’s inaugural executive mansion, where nine enslaved people served the first president.
Just a few steps away lies one of the world’s premier free historic attractions: the Liberty Bell. Housed within a sleek glass pavilion, the Liberty Bell Center allows visitors to immerse themselves in the dramatic history of this global symbol of freedom through interactive exhibits and short documentary films. The self-guided experience culminates in a breathtaking, up-close view of the iconic fractured bell itself, set against a stunning backdrop of Independence Hall that is perfect for a memorable photo.

Near Independence Mall is the home of American flag maker Betsy Ross. There, you can meet the famed seamstress herself as she retells her revolutionary story. And only a block away, you can stroll along the carefully preserved Elfreth’s Alley, the nation’s oldest continuously inhabited street.
Other easily walkable Old City attractions that will have any visitor feeling patriotic include Carpenters’ Hall, the First Bank of the United States, Benjamin Franklin Museum & Franklin Court, and Christ Church & Burial Ground — where Franklin and other patriots are buried.
You’ll look the part decked out in red, white, and blue after a quick stop at the Independence Gift Shop. Conveniently located right inside the Independence Visitor Center directly across Market Street from the Liberty Bell, this official city store stands as the largest retail destination for Philadelphia-themed merchandise. The shelves are stocked with an array of unique souvenirs, locally–made fudge and artisan candies, and custom apparel designed by Philly creators. It’s the absolute best spot in the historic district to pick up everything from revolutionary-style hats and American flag gear to your favorite Rocky merchandise.
While at the visitor center, check out the Times Square-style TKTS booth to grab discounted seats to the best theater performances in town and get information on historic tours.
Every year from Juneteenth (June 19) through the Fourth of July, Wawa Welcome America — sponsored by beloved regional convenience store Wawa and celebrated as the nation’s largest Independence Day festival — hosts a massive, 16-day series of FREE, family-friendly events bridging the two freedom holidays. A massive cornerstone of the festival is its highly popular Free Museum Days program, which allows visitors to explore the African American Museum in Philadelphia, Science History Institute, National Constitution Center, and dozens of other premier cultural institutions on select days without paying a dime for admission. Beyond the galleries, the citywide summer celebration features vibrant neighborhood block parties, open-air movie screenings, and live concerts.
In the days leading up to July 4th, visitors can experience a patriotic parade and an orchestra performance from the Philly Pops. Be sure to check out the daily calendar of events as there are colorful fireworks displays some nights before Independence Day.
July 4th is a day packed with free festivities. Independence Day kicks off right outside Independence Hall with the patriotic Celebration of Freedom Ceremony, a proud morning tradition featuring moving speeches, inspiring musical numbers, and the awarding of prestigious recognitions.
The grand finale of the entire 16-day festival is the massive July 4th concert, culminating in the dazzling fireworks spectacular along the expansive Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
Over the years, the Parkway stage has welcomed an elite roster of music icons—including Earth, Wind & Fire, The Goo Goo Dolls, Mary J. Blige, Demi Lovato, and Pitbull.
Following the concert, the night wraps up with a spectacular, show-stopping fireworks display that illuminates the sky directly above the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It’s visible for miles around.
